  1. Gayle - you had and have given so much wisdom and fun to the world. In fact the first Green I ever met was you, so you were directly my inspiration for so many things. Very saddened, we will all be poorer without you. You were one of the few people for whom the long slog of political campaigning just seemed effortless. A bundle of energy with a wicked sense of humour is how i'll remember you :-) R.I.P.

I was sad to hear that Gayle's passing :( I never knew you as well as I would have liked, but I knew you well enough to know you were a wonderful, compassionate person and a passionate activist. I'll fondly remember our late night talks when both of us were on facebook at silly hours of the morning unable to sleep (if you're wondering, I am indeed still a connoisseur of toast), I won't forget how you came to my defence when I was arrested, I'm still benefiting from discovering Kim By The Sea because of you, and you were an important political influence. But most of all we'll miss your tireless work to make the world a better place. Rest in peace x

  3. Gayle. First memory, knocking on my door saying, 'I'm from the Green Party...'. Then it turned out we were neighbours. Then when I decided to run for Council, you gave me the lowdown, how it works, in theory and in practice.
And after that, lots of talking, eating and never quite making it to the gym at the same time.
I'm unhappy that you're gone. I'd said earlier on today, having heard the news, that you were 'a real person'. I never thought that there were too many of those around, and now there is one less. We will miss you.

  5. Dear Gayle - I always greatly admired your political thinking and skills even when we disagreed, and thought you a proper good laugh with genuine Irish sense of craic and plamas.

It's no secret that we fell out. I'm so sorry we never got to make up from it, but glad that we were friends and colleagues for sometime beforehand and had some very good times out together. Will be thinking of you, whatever dimension you are in now. Make 'em laugh. Love and light. Steve.

  6. Gayle, on a drunken night we called eachother sisters forever, it was silly but I always remembered. I wish distance had not been such an easy excuse for not being in touch for so long. I wish wonderful people all knew how much they are loved so that they never leave us the way you did. Why do we have to praise people once it's too late. you'll never read any of this...

  7. I remember first meeting you with Cliff standing outside the MMUnion in January 2010 when you were both campaigning for the Green Party. Your personality was kind and welcoming, and I can't believe that although we didn't speak as much, that you've left this world so young, with so much still to give. Rest in peace, you will be greatly missed.

  8. Dearest Gayle, We are all utterly devastated to learn you're no longer with us. Few words can describe the feelings of loss and sadness to learn of your passing. You taught me the ropes, showed me what it means to be mean, green and never let anyone get in between. You stuck by me and stood up for me when I was alone and when others had walked away. You put the Humanity back into my birthplace that is Hulme and we welcomed you as one of our own combined with your electric passion for all that is good and true. Walk in beauty and enjoy the peace that awaits you on the other side. We will never forget your spirit, -and as they say.. "know we'll meet again some sunny day". Much Love to both you and your family, David x

  9. On behalf of the Campaign Against Climate Change I want to send my condolences to Gayle's friends, family and colleagues in the Green Party, as well as the wider environmental movement.

Gayle was a passionate advocate for environmental and social justice. Her work in Hulme was always an inspiration to those of us in Manchester and while we often had disagreements on things, those differences were always in the most genuine spirit of wanting to make the world a better place.

Words always fail at times like this. Gayle will not be forgotten and we will continue her work, weakened by her loss, but strengthend by her inspiration.

  10. I hadn't know Gayle for as long as most of you, being a relative newcomer to the Green Party. I first met her at my first Green Conference in Birmingham a couple of years ago. I remember her as being committed, approachable and funny, and always willing to respond patiently to stupid questions (from me) with sensible, practical advice. She helped to point us in Milton Keynes in the right direction and will be missed.

  11. Gayle was a great personality, intelligent, concerned, humorous and fragile. She fought with all her strength for what she believed in. She brought energy and excitement, challenge and fun to Manchester Green Party. Her work in Hulme was outstanding. It was most unfortunate that the local election 2010 was subsumed by the national election and voter confusion and distress.
I became her friend and supporter from 2009 during the Euro election campaign and encouraged her to take national office for the Green Party after the disappointment of 2010. I enjoyed her company immensely and was constantly learning more about strategy and politics from her. I was honoured to be invited to visit her family in Ireland and regret that I wasn't able to go at that time. I was so hopeful that she would flourish in Norwich.
Gayle, I'm honoured to have known you and will greatly miss you.

  13. Gayle and Chris organised their big Hulme campaign from our office, so I saw close hand Gayle's commitment, enthusiasm and her increasing skill as a politician and activist. They made an impressive team. I was really glad that she had chosen to move to my home town, to boost the strength of the Party there, and her own, I hoped. Gayle was open minded, kind, warm and witty. She wasn’t afraid of conflict but she was easy going as well and didn’t let political disagreements become personal ones, and I really respected her for that. It is very hard to accept that she has gone.

Gayle, you were one of the people I most admired and respected in the world and I feel privileged to have known you. You were great company and I shall miss your wit, your warmth and your tenacity. So sorry for your pain and grateful for your kindnesses. I'll always remember you, with much love and respect. x

  15. Gayle, you were one of the easiest people to get on with, personally and professionally, and nicest and warmest people to hang around with, and I'm just sorry that I didn't know you were going through so much. I'm glad at least I saw you last year in Cardiff. I'm still in shock.

  16. Gayle was passionate, determined, and ambitious for green politics. We served together on GPEX last term. We had our differences of opinion on some issues, but worked well together on other projects. Great company after a hard day at work, she was one of the few to express appreciation of my singing talents at the end of a long evening. I cannot believe that she is gone from us. I will miss her.

  17. This news is only just starting to sink in today. I was so sad to hear the news yesterday. Gayle was passionate and funny, hugely committed to social and environmental justice and making the world a better place, and always ready for an argument! We fell out once or twice, but she was a good friend, a caring person and she was loved by a lot of people. She will be sorely missed. Look out for your friends, the ones who need you the most won't always come to you first.

  18. It makes little sense and seems so unfair that this world would lose someone so passionate, funny, and principled as Gayle O'Donovan. I met her on the G20 protests and stayed in touch and met up several times afterwards. Sadly, we communicated less in recent months, and that makes this an even more bitter pill to swallow. I've dedicated a blog post to this sad news. What a loss.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

  29. Gayle you're not gone - your strength, sincerity and total commitment to those who needed it will stay with us, strengthening our resolve for always having part of you around. And your huge heart which was the force behind all of that, is also a good reminder that we should do our utmost to look out for each other, so everybody knows how much they are loved and in tougher times are reminded of that. You are much loved, rest in peace

  30. Really shocked and full of sadness to hear the news of your death. It's hard to believe that someone so young and vibrant is no more. I am sure that in other circumstances we would have found a lot to laugh about together and now I will not have the opportunity. I often wished we were on the same side but in spite of everything I am sorry I won't get the chance to know you better. On a very personal level I know your family will be devastated and I send them love and condolences.

  36. It has become very clear both from comments here, and from what many of us already knew directly, that Gayle had a real capacity to draw new people into political engagement and activity. That is a rare quality. And Gayle gave an enormous energy and commitment to the Green Party. I am sure that the Manchester Green Party will want to acknowledge that contribution in some way in coming months. Green politics is the poorer without her. I join with the many others here in sending my condolences to family and friends.

    Dear Gayle,

I'm so sad that you felt this much despair. I'd hoped Norwich was a way forward though I missed you here. I tried twice to write on this page, crying my eyes out, but I was a technical failure again.

Remember Alison, a Green activist we used to meet in 8th Day cafe?
She wrote this to me and wants it put on your tribute page.

"I am so shocked and saddened to hear about Gayle- on the few occasions I met her she struck me as a wonderfully sincere, caring, intelligent, and engaged person who was totally on the ball about environmental issues. Her tragic death will be a great loss to the Green Party."

Gayle, you were big in life and may be bigger in death. I'll miss you. Anne Power.

  41. Dear Gayle,
So sorry to hear this terrible news, and my brain is struggling to accept the information. You have always been an inspiring and motivating person; warm, bubbly and determined. We’ve campaigned over many issues together and your support, along with David’s, in fighting the general election 2010 made a real difference to me. You always stayed optimistic in terms of will as well as intellect, and I personally found it a great comfort to know you were there.
To Gayle’s family and loved ones, I cannot even start to think of how you will cope with your pain and loss, but you should know that Gayle was much loved and admired by many of us here in Manchester. We will miss her.
To my friends and comrades in the Green Party, we appreciated Gayle’s work in uniting and teaching those of us from different traditions about how much we have in common and how we can work together. We have lost a good one this week, and she cannot be replaced.
    With deepest sympathy,

  42. I first met Gayle at a meeting of SEMA (Stop the Expansion of Manchester Airport), which she was chairing. I was so impressed by this vibrant, articulate and highly intelligent young woman, an impression which strengthened and deepened over the ensuing months and years. I particularly enjoyed working with Gayle on the Climate and Capitalism Dayschool, which gained so much from her energy and commitment. In an age of cynicism and despair, Gayle's humanity shone out like a beacon of hope. She will be very sadly missed.
    Rest in peace Gayle.

  45. it is testament to how much of a great character she was that I only came across her a few times but I felt compelled to show my condolences and attend her memorial. During these times, we reflect and it became apparent that those few encounters showed the impact she had on people. She was the much needed smile in the often serious struggle, she had the tenacity to try, try and try again but she had a wit and intelligence that made her an amazing activst and person.

  47. Since hearing the news i've not been able to express in writing, or digest emotionally, a barrage of feelings; ranging from disbelief, guilt, shock, sadness, and a gnawing sense of utter powerlessness. Perhaps, i've hoped, am still hoping, that this is a nightmare, and that soon, soon i'll wake up, everyone will wake up, and everything will be fine and you'll be there, in Norwich, and we'll be on our way, visiting ... That Gayle O'Donovan's smile, laugh and wit, all of it will be waiting ... For me, for many others, you'll always be living, Gayle, you're alive. You're alive in not mere 'memories', but in the experiences, the words, the whispers, the hugs and the look, the smiles, and kisses (not to mention the punches); you'll actually always be there, be here. Good bye Gayle, and, hello, where ever you are. I miss you too

  49. Unbelievable and sad news indeed, Gayle was certainly one in a million. I met Gayle when she moved into Hulme and becoming my next door neighbour. One day, I found myself in the lift with this chirpy young Irish woman who told me she had recently moved into the building and passionately wanted to be 'involved' in all things local. We hit it off immediately and although we were soon to discover that we belonged to opposing political parties, we continued to be good friends putting our differences aside and amongst other things enjoying some good old jaw aching laughter into the early hours of the morning. Gayle had a wicked sense of humour and an infectious laugh indeed, she had bounds of energy and cared for so much and so many around her. She will be sadly missed by many - including myself and the friends she made here in this tower block on the edge of Hulme.

  50. I met Gayle many times in campaign meetings regarding the reckless expansion of Manchester Airport. She was amazing. Gayle always brought humour and energy to the hard work which is undertaken, a lot of graft, against the odds, by a small number of people. 63. The comments here are testament to the great impact Gayle made upon those who met her; particular amongst the activist community in Manchester and beyond.

It seems only yesterday when I first met Gayle, (after a climate change event at the City of Manchester stadium a few years ago). Since then I've been amazed at the energy which I've seen her put into the causes in which she believed; at the same time she could be very kind - one memory I have is of her looking after me when I was bitten by a dog whilst out leafleting.

There is now a space in my life where you should be. I didn't know you very well, but I did realise last year that you needed our encouragement to keep doing the work that we valued so much. I'm sorry that I didn't encourage you enough.

When you told me I was being 'odd', I listened and understood. Greens are people too. We are not superhuman and we can not save the world on our own. We can only do this together.

It is my great regret that we were not able to convince you that , in spite of all of Life's challenges, there is a better way. But also, we could not do this if you didn't let us in to your world.

Thinking of you . . . it should not have ended like this . . .

  69. Gayle - At conference this weekend I realized how much I will miss getting to know you better. I heard so much about your passion but we really only met a couple of times, and mostly that was to talk about some of the messy feelings that come after a difficult election campaign. I could identify with the complete frustration you had then back in 2010. 71. I can hardly begin to explain how much this has affected me. It is on my mind from morning to night.

The battle we fight on on climate change, war and social justice is so intense and difficult it saps the strength of the very best. Gayle's death has made me reflect on why we fight and why we are prepared to fight to the bitter end, as she did. We fight because we are the optimists. Despite the terror of the future we look into the abyss with the belief we can change it for the better and we have the selflessness to give it all that we have got.

We fight because we know that it is the right thing to do, but we know that fighting carries risks. As many of us know, we risk our liberty, our careers, our bodies, our relationships and often our sanity.

  72. I can hardly begin to explain how much this has affected me. It is on my mind from morning to night.

The battle we fight on on climate change, war and social justice is so intense and difficult it saps the strength of the very best. Gayle's death has made me reflect on why we fight and why we are prepared to fight to the bitter end as she did. We fight because we are the optimists. Despite the terror of the future we look into the abyss with the belief we can change it for the better and we have the selflessness to give it all that we have got.

  75. As I've been taking a break from close involvement with green campagning, apart from a bit in Liverpool and Ormskirk, the shock of Gayle's loss has only now reached me. She was so well loved and respected in Manchester - and well beyond, clearly. I was often there in my role as NW coordinator for Friends of the Earth, and can only echo what so many have said. Her positive outlook, humour and sociablility were uplifting. I know well that the experience of trying to change conventional mindsets and the staus quo can get you down. I do hope you knew, Gayle, that you were an inspiration.

  76. It was only last Saturday, at a march against council cuts in Manchester, that I found out about the sad death of Gayle (from Steven Durrant). He told me about this tribute page.

I first met Gayle at the end of the Convention of the Left in 2008, when she asked me for a drink (after saying she'd been handing out some of my leaflets). When she told me her name, I instantly recalled the song "Donovan's Doorway" by my favourite overtly political band of all time Latin Quarter. I subsequently wrote and recorded a political love song with that title. Although I told her about it, it is one of my deepest regrets that I never found out whether she listened to it before she died. [Tears are in my eyes now.]

The Galaxia version is me doing it as poetry, but I sang it much better on Thursday with some great improvised guitar from someone who will be in my new band, provisionally called Fruity Frank and the Frisky Freaks. The band will record a version and I will upload it to the internet soon and post a link on this tribute page.

On a different subject, 3 of my friends on Facebook have invited me to sign the petition https://www.change.org/petitions/tell-edfenergy-to-drop-legal-action-against-no-dash-for-gas-activists#invite and I signed it with the following comment:

Signing this in solidarity with the late Gayle O'Donovan, former secretary of Manchester Green Party and member of Green Left. She would probably have participated if she was still alive.

  77. Gayle, it's been so long since I've seen you now. You were a wonderful woman who looked out for me despite only knowing me a short while. I really thought the world of you and it kills me to think of how much you've missed out on, I'm sure you'd of been delighted to know your cousin suzanne (my mother) has had a beautiful little girl and has now moved to london. It felt impossible to stop thinking about you when I went over to limerick last week and how lovely it would of been for you to of been with us. I really from the bottom of my heart hope you're happy where you are now, you were a true inspiration and I can assure you that next year when I'm old enough I'll be voting green :) All my love Gayle - Jack your cousin
